PART TIMERS

It is for certain that there is no harder working or more mistreated individual than the UPS part-timer. Further, it is inexcusable that part timers in 1988 were paid more than you are today nearly 20 years later. Many of your jobs place great physical demands on your body under extreme temperatures. The APWA will see to it that your pay fits your efforts as soon as we get the chance.

Also, you are given very little opportunity to take part in decisions as to what is expected of you in your job. Do you realize that you comprise more than 50% of the UPS work force yet you are treated like you comprise 1% of the work force? The APWA will make your voice heard.

You can expect at least the following from the APWA:

First, we want to make full-time jobs available to part-timers by enacting a retirement for the full timers so that they can leave after 20 years. This will make full time jobs available to you sooner. Did you realize that UPS pays enough into the full time retirement plan that this should be a reality today? The money is simply mismanaged.

Second we want to make defined work regions called "pods".
This would allow part timers in the smaller outlying centers to avoid having to wait 30 years for a full time job. In other words we don't believe that you should be penalized for working in the smaller centers as you are today. We want to group all the outlying centers with a major hub that is near them. This will expand your opportunity to go full time sooner. It is wrong to allow UPS to go outside to hire full time employees at nearby large facilities when they have loyal employees in these smaller centers who would love to go full time even if it meant moving or commuting from their current residence.

Third, comparatively speaking you are rewarded more than the full timer's pension IF you stay part time your entire career? We can, with your help, make it so that you are not penalized for taking a full time job.

Fourth we want to see that you are paid what your work is worth.
The APWA will "stand tall" for part-timers. Better treatment, a voice in your work affairs, improved mobility, and fair pay. The APWA can make it happen.

We urge you to join the APWA TODAY.
